and society enforces the idea of beauty equals thinness, and many young women feel very inadequate if they do not meet these ideal expectations. Therefore, in their drive for
perfection, many young women develop eating disorders, and the results can even be life-threatening. While men suffer from eating disorders as well, the number of females suffering from either
anorexia or bulimia is much higher than that of men. Therefore, the tests which measure the likelihood of someone being afflicted with such a disorder are geared toward young
women. The Easting Disorder Inventory-2, or EDI-2, is a psychological test which is designed as a measure of psychological features commonly
associated with anorexia nervosa and bulimia (Garner, 2003). The test is designed for a population of 12 and over but norms are geared toward college-age females (Garner, 2003).
Essentially, this test is recommended for use by psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers who "work with young women or men who are suspected or known to have eating disorders" (Garner,
2003). The EDI-2 gives results in the form of 11 scores (or sub-scales), and these scores are for the following
areas: Drive for Thinness, Bulimia, Body Dissatisfaction, Ineffectiveness, Perfectionism, Interpersonal Distrust, Interoceptive Awareness, Maturity Fears, Asceticism (provisional), Impulse Regulation (provisional), Social Insecurity (provisional) (Garner, 2003). The test takes about
20 minutes to take (Garner, 2003). The EDI-2 is designed as a diagnosis tool, however it should not be used
alone to formulate any diagnosis (Garner, 2003). The EDI-2 provides clinical information in regards to the psychological and behavioral attributes of eating disorders (Garner, 2003).
