Fader, 2000). It was a tale of teenage boys who were alienated and an interesting book that created a new realism, something that helped to establish literature for young adults (2000). Today, there are many works in the genre, but Hinton was a pioneer. Although written in the 1960s, it would not be until the 1980s when Coppola made this groundbreaking work into a film. In fact, in 1983, Francis Ford Coppola made two films based on Hinton works featuring the "pre-Brat Pack" casting of future stars like Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon and Patrick Swayze (Nashawaty, 1997). The films were low budget but were somewhat successful. Coppola said he was sweet natured with Outsiders but made Rumble Fish rather dreamy and existential (1997). The Outsiders was admittedly the romantic piece (1997). In comparing and contrasting the film The Outsiders with its original creation , it appears that the director was true to the original work. Certainly, the plot is maintained and the thematic elements are the same in both. The tone is perhaps different but that does not take away from the authors meaning. In fact, Coppola essentially brings Hintons characters to life. That is not a trite statement. Rather, the fact that Coppolas skill, and attention to detail, allows him to make a film that is true to the writers intent is nothing short of amazing. The plot of the film The Outsiders is very true to the book. It involves the rivalry between the socs and the greasers and also highlights social class. The greasers are of course individuals who are of a lower class background than the socs and are seen as troublesome. One might use labeling theory in an analysis of the story ...
