being chopped down. Yet, the story represents more than a mere selling of a place, as it is a sale that takes place under duress. The family has no choice
as they must pay off the mortgage and the sale of the property is the only way to accomplish this. Of course, the setting and the tone of the play
are very different than what someone in contemporary American society might imagine. The final scene takes place in Russia during a very difficult time. What is paramount is the differences
between social classes. In fact, the concepts broached by the author do relate to the socio-political situation in early Russia prior to the revolution. That is, there was a significant
class divide between rich and poor and this is something that is highlighted in the context of this well known work. There are several themes that are apparent in
the context of this play. One is nostalgia and another is loss. There are many more, but for purposes of this analysis, these two are the ones that will be
a focus. In evaluating this play, one can easily see that both themes play a significant role. Whenever anyone moves from his or her home, even if that is done
in a happy context, there is a sense of nostalgia. There is also a sense of loss. There is for example the loss of that place where someone may have
grown up or seen children grow up. In this particular case, because the family is rushed out of their home, the listening to the chopping of the tree is quite
