it received and, more specifically, to try and reveal how the critics viewed the characters and setting of this somewhat controversial novel. Understanding
this novel in this way brings to light many important issues. This wasnt just a black man writing a story. This was a very powerful story written at
a very influential time in history. The ideas which Hughes revealed in this novel were no doubt controversial at the time. Therefore, we cannot necessarily regard this novel
in light of current events, but must attempt to interpret this novel from the viewpoint of the past, when it was originally written and published. Critics Views of
"Not Without Laughter" Not Without Laughter was written by Langston Hughes and is considered by many to be his finest work (Not Without
Laughter). Ironically, Hughes himself is said to have hated this book more than any of his others (Hughes Biography). It is the story of a young black boy
living in a small Kansas town (Not Without Laughter). Its a sad story and tells of his rather slow and sad awakening to the realities of life (Not Without
Laughter). This character faces many struggles throughout the story and sadly, many of those struggles are still present in our society today for African-Americans (Not Without Laughter).
