turned out to be true, is the one about Britney Spears. After quite some time of speculation, the Times Union--and many other publications--reported: "Britney Spears has revealed what might be
Hollywoods worst- kept secret: Shes pregnant" ("Lullabies," 2005, A2). This is good news for anybody and the media, and the public, love these rumors because they are so nice.
The Britney Spears rumor is certainly a pipe dream. Many girls who identify with Britney and see her as a role model also have the dream of one day growing
up and having a baby. It is the dream of most women. The rumor had been going around for some time as the media photographically examined the singers growing tummy.
Although she is not big yet, there were comparisons to her formerly sculpted abs that just are no longer there. And while that is a good type of rumor that
few mind, the bogie rumor is something that is quite the opposite. Bogie rumors are aligned with a fear or detrimental outcome (Kimmel, 2004). In respect to this type of
rumor, it seems that the one that predicts a dire flu epidemic each year is almost humorous. The news reported in the Fall and Winter of 2004/2005 that there was
a flu vaccine shortage and they predicted a very bad year for influenza. It seems that every year, there are rumors about why the seasons will be bad and the
news media backs up the stories with scientific evidence. Of course, flu season comes and goes and it seems that it is never as bad as predicted. An example
