Introduction Following the Civil War the South was in a position that was often seen as chaotic and truly without a great deal of direction. Slavery was no longer legal
and an entire economic empire, so to speak, was dismantled with the end of slavery. Reconstruction began but it was not necessarily what it could have been in relationship to
truly bringing the South into the Union in the same manner as the North, and in relationship to how it treated the newly freed slaves. However, many may argue that
what took place with Reconstruction was positive and thus the legacy was positive. The following paper examines some various authors as presented in the book the American Spirit by David
