subcomponent of American society. Participation is special interest groups not only conveys a sense of empowerment to those who are interested in the groups particular cause, it provides the
opportunity to make a difference. Special interest groups are particularly powerful in the political lobby. Different groups, however, go about their daily business in different ways. While
one special interest group may choose to approach change through the standard channels, another might choose a more direct and visible route to make their opinion known to those that
matter. The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into one individuals experiences in The Alliance of Bikers Aimed Towards Equity (ABATE, 2009).
Special interest groups such as ABATE are considered by many a critical component of the democratic system. Others, however, are not so sure. They
question whether special interest groups gain at the expense of the general public. They make this contention while emphasizing the strength of the nation rests with their ability to
change government when change is needed. James Madison himself wrote in "The Federalist Papers", for example, that a federal style government would have local policy determined by the people
and this in turn would influence the policies of the national government where local policy from different regions would combine to provide policies which would be in the best interest
of the entire nation. Madison was very aware that pure democracies where characterized more by turbulence and contention than by stability (Wolin, 1996). The ABATE organization makes a
