To this philosopher, there are six primary elements elements which include character, plot, diction, thought, spectacle and song (2003). The character cannot be too virtuous or too evil either (2003). In Othello, one certainly sees the elements of tragedy, and it does seem to fit into Aristotles paradigm. Of course, there are parts of Othello which are not tragic and those deserve attention as well. It becomes quite obvious that Othello is a tragedy. People die unnecessarily and while it is Othellos doing ultimately, he is thought to have been somehow coerced into the setting. He is tricked and in some sense, it is this non-white protagonist who is the victim. It is not hard to have some sympathy for him. At the same time, if one disregards the ironic twist, and looks at the story from another point of view, it does not seem so tragic at all, at least not until the very end. The tragic nature of the story does rely on the supposition that Othello is indeed propelled to do something because he is in some way coerced. And that element does exist. However, if one just sees Othello as a pathetic loser , the tragic nature of the tale is replaced by disgust. There is anger and a sense of knowing. Could Desdemona have foreseen her fate somehow?
