in order to understand psychopathy ("Study," 2001). Why? Perhaps writers and film makers have created real life representations of true psychopaths. Thus, watching film can be enlightening for real life
detectives who try to solve unusual serial killer cases. However, long before Hannibal Lector, there was the lanky, quiet, Norman Bates, who
ran a motel with the help of his dead mother. Yet, some have questioned the validity of Bates and other characters as they are portrayed in film. Do filmmakers exaggerate
traits of such killers to provide excitement on screen, or are there psychopaths such as Norman Bates in real life? Of course, there are true life serial killers such as
the Son of Sam who received messages from a dog and Jeffery Dahmer who ate his victims, but these are aberrations. In studying the film Psycho, does Norman represent a
typical psychopath? First, does Hitchcocks film create an accurate representation of mental illness? Again, in some ways yes, but Norman Bates is probably
not a typical mentally ill patient. Few are killers and few keep their mothers corpses in their living rooms. Yet, the representation is not out of the realm of possibility.
Still, do filmmakers do a disservice to the mentally challenged when they create larger than life characters who are supposed to represent people with such handicaps?
