infiltrating their lives and it is very dangerous. That is the premise of Arthur Millers The Crucible, a story that is said really to be a comment on McCarthyism but
one that also portrays the Salem Witch hunts that happened during the seventeenth century. Miller describes a phenomenon. But what Miller also does is to show the
class divide, among other things, about the people who live there. He paints a dark portrait of the inner workings of mankind and an inhumanity that is clearly exemplified by
the rich and poor. The accused are turned into objects and the accusers are run by emotions only. Perhaps there is an underlying message that goes far beyond the trials.
Perhaps the trials represent the inhumanity of man in a more general way as the rich control the poor without regard to their well being. But what Miller also does
in a broader context is to highlight how mass hysteria can become a reality. A basic question is how this ordinary community had become one where logic and reason had
gone out the window. How did it happen that so many could believe in something that really never existed? In The Crucible, there seems to be an appeal to false
authority. The fact that officials in the town deem someone a witch, and that they determine it is bad, creates the illusion that it is reality. An example of this
may be seen, but in a much broader context, in terms of what now exists in the United States. There is the idea that the terrorists who were responsible for
