it does seem to be the case that more successful areas are endowed with ideas of success. One writer observes the following: "When scholars and historians look back at the

the amount of progress in a country and its tolerance of western ideas, according to a leading authority on international think tanks" ("Ideas Have Huge Consequences," 2006). If in fact
Weber is right, what might the future hold? Are values in society changing today and in which direction are people headed? What economic consequences might they have? First, it pays
to look at what Max Weber actually believed. When Weber wrote the Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, he understood that there is a drive that is intrinsic
to the human being. Humans are, further, competitive. It is what drives them and what drives the economies of the world. Perhaps the greatest example of this idea, that
humans thrive on competition, is the government employee. Many are incompetent and work slowly. There is no drive. They daydream and when the day is over--often at 4:30--they go home
and dread the next day. It is a rut. Compare that to the hard working, up and coming executive who has the heart of bear but the tenacity of a
lion. He gets up in the morning eager to make points, to do better, to accomplish more and soon he will be rewarded monetarily or with perks. There is zest
