story, the characters are written in a way to highlight the dysfunction and disconnection of everyone involved. In the beginning there is a sort of innocence about the sexual encounters that take place but as the story unfolds the reader becomes more and more aware of her unhappiness and her cynicism concerning her sexual exploits. As such one truly gets a sense of the dysfunctional and the disconnection of the characters. The following paper analyzes Minots story in these respects, and more. An Analysis of Lust by Susan Minot As mentioned, in the beginning of the story the narrator is offering up a sort of innocence and romantic view of her exploits. She states, "I met him the first month away at boarding school. He had a halo from the campus light behind him. I flipped" (Minor 349). In this the reader can see that she began her sexual endeavors, perhaps, as a way to find some sort of spiritual and meaningful connection to a boy, which becomes very ironic for that is not something she will ever receive from the boys she sleeps with. They do not care and are clearly disconnected from her and relationships that do not possess sex. The story gradually becomes more cynical as she tells of one boy or another and her memories as they are associated with smells and songs. She recounts one time, which is perhaps the first real negative presentation of her situation, when she realizes she is good at some things like math "but the second a boy put his arm around me, I forgot about wanting to do anything else, which felt like a relief at first until it became like sinking into a muck" (Minot 350).
