told in a way that forces the reader to consider whats really happening very carefully, because Alexie doesnt spell it out. The tale opens with a scene describing the protagonists birth: "The sheets are dirty. An Indian Health Service Hospital in the early sixties. On this reservation or that reservation. Any reservation, a particular reservation" (Alexie). What Alexie is saying here is that no one cares about the Indians as evidenced by the fact the sheets are dirty. It could be on any reservation, implying they are all so much alike they are interchangeable, as are the Indians who live on them, at least to whites. Alexie makes it clear that the woman whos giving birth to John stands for all Native women: "Johns mother is Navajo or Lakota. She is Apache or Seminole. She is Yakama or Spokane" (Alexie). In other words, she is Indian, an Indian woman with no identity beyond that of being dark-skinned. After John is born, he is whisked away and delivered to a white couple, the anonymously-named Smiths, who have apparently adopted him, or perhaps bought him on the black market; its not clear. What is clear is that the white woman is much more enamored of the idea of adopting a Native baby than is her husband, who "grimaces briefly then smiles" (Alexie). The question arises, why would this wealthy couple want such a child? But there is no answer in the text. What is clear, and disturbing, is that the Smiths are not taking John on his own terms. That is, they have no intention of telling him about his heritage, allowing him to speak his native language, or sending him to a school with other Indian youngsters.
