Gilgamesh is a king in historical reality who lived around 2800 BCE; in the epic, he is first portrayed as a youthful tyrant and his strength and energy are employed in contests against young male subjects as well as in seductions of females (11). As son of Ninsun who is a minor goddess, he is considered to be semi-divine (11). After complaints have been made about his behavior by the citizens of Uruk, the gods in heaven decide to create a companion for him; the companion would be one who could match his ability and physical prowess (Binding 11). Enkidu is born and after that, this character grows up and is coated with hair like an animal (11). A hunter lures Enkidu with a prostitute and eventually Enkidu and Shamhat engage in sexual activity for many nights (11). Enkidu is stigmatized after this episode. It should be noted that this occurs for the purposes of taming Enkidu, the wild man (Radcliffe PG). Siduri is a young, but wise woman, and advises Gilgamesh to give up his quest for immortality and simply to live well, and to make each day a feast of rejoicing, as well as to keep himself clean and well groomed; he is to cherish his children and his wife (Radcliffe PG). It appears that as the story goes on, the advice becomes something akin to leading a good, moral life. It shows that prostitution is evil. But some Christian scholars might dismiss the advice as being something consistent with mindless hedonism (PG). That seems to be almost a paradox as in the present day, people think of giving up sin and becoming a well-groomed, faithful citizen as something related to religion, not indulging in ...
