them which other people supposed it was. After the war, Longstreet was essentially used as a scapegoat and people pointed their fingers at Longstreet when they needed to identify
the Confederacy loss. In reality however, Longstreet was a brilliant leader and strategist and did not deserve whatsoever the scandal which followed him for the rest of his life.
Who Was General James Longstreet? James Longstreet was born in South Carolina on January 8, 1821 (Hampton, 2002). Within a
few short weeks, he returned with his mother to their own home in northern Georgia (Hampton, 2002). "James Longstreet first
offered his services to the Confederacy through the state of Alabama after resigning his commission as a Major in the United States army" (Hampton, 2002). Much to his surprise,
he received a colonels commission commanding infantry (Hampton, 2002). He did well and continued to get regular promotions and much recognition (Hampton, 2002). He continued to rise in
"rank and stature in the Confederate command structure" (Hampton, 2002). Longstreet gave the Confederate Army exemplary service (Hampton, 2002).
When Robert E. Lee to command and formed the Army of Northern Virginia, Longstreet and Lee became fast friends and respected each other as colleagues (Hampton, 2002). Longstreet continued
