world powers get their strength from this economic power base. Further, politically, the fact that Europe is not expanding as there is no where to go anymore must enter the
picture. The world is more developed than it has ever been. Centuries after Columbus set sail, there are maps which show that uncharted territory is not likely to be found.
This is what the people know now, but in the past, Europe embraced a significant empire. Pocock (1997) denotes two eras where "Europe" is defined primarily as an economic
entity, the first of which is during the Enlightenment, from 1713 to 1789, and the second era is the present. Karl Marx lived during the second era, but he was
close enough to the first to grasp and embrace it. Marx was an economist and a political thinker. He is best known for his Communist Manifesto, but he did write
heavily on economics. To Marx, everything is related to class stratification and the power of the capitalists. To a large extent, the government is the enemy. Hence, a Marxist explanation
of empire went much to political thinking and how capitalism was not desirable. This differs from the thought of postcolonial thinkers. It seems that at least according to Marxs
historical materialism, capitalism is a given. Capitalism is also needed to fund a future communist society. Unlike Russia that did not stop to make sure all was well in terms
of wealth, the future nations could in fact embrace capitalism before implementing communism. The irony is that the wealthy capitalist nations resist Communism like the plague. Of course, according to
