that are compiled in All in the Timing. But these plays are odd nonetheless, revealing his unique sense of style and obviously different take on reality. What unifies
the themes however isnt their quirkiness or their obscurity, but the brilliance with which each was crafted, turning oddity and obscurity into artistically spoken truths about humanity. This then
is Ives genius - his ability to revere the simplest universal truths and elevate them to a philosophical level. Consider the story
of The Philadelphia, which takes place in a restaurant. In this story, a man goes in and places his order for a cheese omelet, and when he asks what
kind of cheese is available, the answer is anything he wants. So, he says hell take Swiss but the waitress replies they no longer have Swiss. This continues
through just about every cheese you can imagine, all to no avail. So, what started as any selection he could possibly want turns into no cheese at all being
available. What we see then is a character who is completely unable to get what he asks for, but in the end, he finds a way to get what
he wants. This becomes a central theme in many of Ives works, and one that highlights the sense of optimism which Ives disperses among his characters and vision of
the world. Another interesting play is called Sure Thing, and this is the story of two people having a simple cup
