More Information on This Paper, Please Peter Abelards History Calamitatum ("History of My Misfortunes") tells the lengthy story of the life and troubles of Abelard, an 11th century
philosopher and theologian. This story relates a number of different periods and perspectives within Abelards life, including the transformation of his monastic perspective and his own struggles with views
of good and evil. Though there are different issues presented in the telling of Abelards life, one of the most substantial issues is the conflict inherent in his personal
and spiritual struggle and his desire for religious atonement. Abelards Life Abelards monasticism is based on his view of self, his capacity to understanding his own identity
in the midst of a spiritual perspective and the desire to express himself through the progression of his own faith (Gilson 9). What must be recognized as a component
of his story is that Abelard viewed his own experiential process as one deeply linked to his monastic viewpoint, to his expression of self as a monk. At the
same time, the importance of this identification should not be overestimated; his life experiences are not limited to the expected or normative views of a monastic life, and as a
result, his identification in this role creates a comparative view when assessing his autobiographical perspective (Morris 17). The format of Historia is important in understanding Abelards
