depended on Native Americans as trading partners. Treaties were made with various tribes, but, in general, were honored only as long as the parameters of the treaty fitted with the
needs and ambitions of whites. There are multiple betrayals marking US/American Indian relations, but perhaps the episode that best exemplifies the greed, duplicity and hypocrisy of official American policy is
the Trail of Tears. The ethnocentric cultural message that was consistently conveyed to Native Americans was that Whites would respect and honor Indian rights only if they acclimated to European-based
society. The Cherokees embraced this paradigm. They were forced to leave their established farms, towns, complete with road systems, infrastructure and schools, in a forced march to Oklahoma in 1831,
during which thousands of people died in route from starvation and exposure. Their assimilation of European dress, lifestyle and religion was no protection against the greed of White intend on
Western expansion. This expansion was regarded by White Americans as Manifest Destiny, while Native Americans viewed it, and rightly so, as the destruction of their way of life. The pattern
of the conflict that accompanied Western expansion can be seen in the events surrounding the Sand Creek massacre. On May 16, 1864, a force under the command of Lieutenant George
