been a number of attempts to pass a Constitutional amendment making English the official language of the United States. This paper discusses this idea, and the objections that have been
raised against it. Discussion Conditions that brought about the idea of the amendment: Not surprisingly, given many Americans xenophobia, the call for such an amendment increases when large groups of
immigrants arrive. One of the earliest mentions of the debate was in 1984 when the Senate held hearings about the possibility of an amendment making English the official language of
the United States. "The constitutional amendment is being pushed by a handful of lawmakers who fear Americas role as a melting pot for foreign cultures and languages is being subverted
by practices allowing immigrants to get by without ever learning English" ("Panel Mulls English as Official U.S. Language"). This immediately begs the question: if immigrants come to this country legally
but choose not to learn English, or have trouble learning the language, should they be forced to learn the language, or perhaps not allowed in in the first place. The
amendment proposed in the 107th Congress said: The English language shall be the official language of the United States. As the official language, the English language shall be used
for all public acts including every order, resolution, vote, or election, and for all records and judicial proceedings of the Government of the United States and the governments of the
