through which individuals share their stories and show their struggles with recovery, while also applying a 12-step program strategy. An observation of an AA meeting provided a clear view
of the process, the facilitation and the value for those battling addiction. Experiences During the Meeting I attended a Friday afternoon AA meeting at the Eastern Shore Chapel.
The meeting was an open meeting, which meant that the meeting was open to all populations and anyone could attend. Before going to the meeting, I was anxious
because I did not know what to expect. I had never attended a meeting like this before. When I got to the meeting, I walked into the room and
immediately sought the group leader. I wanted to introduce myself and discuss my purpose for attending the meeting before the meeting began.
I was surprised when I first walked in to see that there were almost 40 people in the room, all seated around tables. Some of the
people sat in groups and it was clear that some of the participants knew each other, while others sat alone. I asked one woman if she could tell me
who the group leader was, and she responded: "Im not sure who is the group leader today." I watched to see if I could determine who the leader was
by watching the interactions that occurred. Finally, after a few minutes, the group leader emerged, and I introduced myself. I told him that I was in a substance
abuse class and that viewing the group setting was an assignment in order to understand and learn about AA meetings.
