and identity of children, especially children from so-called minorities as is seen in Amy Tans short story Two Kinds. Amy Tans Two
Kinds Amy Tans short story Two Kinds offers the reader a look at a mother and daughter who are often at odds with one another. The daughter clearly desires her
mothers attention and approval but this is something that she never really obtains. In real life parents are, according to one author, often perhaps more ambivalent to their children rather
than being individuals who offer unconditional love. This is clearly the case with the mother in Tans story as she pushes her daughter consistently to be the best in whatever
she thinks her daughter should be doing. She tells her daughter "Only ask you be your best" (Tan). The author who discusses ambivalence illustrates how parents "make an investment"
when raising children "and return on investment is viewed from different perspectives by investor and investee because they have different goals" (Pelusi 66). In the case of the mother she
is investing her dreams of what her daughter can be, insisting on hard work and success in a world that is very harsh for a woman, and a Chinese woman
