as they address the special conditions involved with ethnicity in America. The following paper compares the two as they present conflict between mother and daughter. Amy Tan and
Alice Walker Amy Tans story begins when Amy is a young girl. Her mother, a woman from China who has lost everything in her past, now resides in the United
States, a place where anything and everything is possible. Tans mother focuses such possibilities on her daughter and the direction her daughter can take. For Tans mother possibilities mean that
Tan can be a genius in anything she set her mind to. She could be the next Shirley Temple, or the next musical genius. All of her failures and past
losses are thus directed into a positive direction that will prove fruitful for her daughter. In essence, she wants her daughter to get the most out of life in America
so that she can live vicariously through her, or allow her to never have to face what she did in her life in China. Alice Walkers story involves a mother
who is not incredibly involved in her one daughters life. That daughter is Dee. The other daughter, Maggie, lives with her and there is no conflict between them because they
are very similar in their simplistic and realistic ideas concerning life. But, the daughter from the city comes home and is clearly not the same, and she is the character
who causes the conflict as she peruses the house and examines things she wants. She wants these things to display, to show others the richness of her African American heritage.
