paper argues that her mothers constant pushing resulted in the girl developing both positive and negative feelings, and ultimately to her rebellion against her mother. Discussion An overview of the
story reveals that it is a tale of "the conflict that children of immigrant parents experience as they try to bridge the gap between two cultures to develop their own
unique identities (Two Kinds). It also reveals that its not possible for one person to choose someone elses life for them. In addition, in this story, Jing-meis mother wont settle
for the girl being successful-she has to be a prodigy. That is, she has to be a genius, she has to become famous, she has to be the very
best in the world at whatever she does (Tan, 1989). Part of this is for Jing-meis sake but a larger part seems to be so that her mother can enjoy
telling everyone about her talented daughter. That is, her mother wants Jing-mei to be successful so that it will reflect well on her. Well look at four examples of the
way her mothers pressure causes Jing-mei to react, either positively or negatively. First, Jing-meis mother tries to make her a prodigy by giving her tests that she finds in various
magazines; these tests are things like name the capitals of the states and so on (Tan, 1989). She hopes that Jing-mei will demonstrate some kind of hugely superior intelligence that
will allow her mother to brag to her friends that Jing-mei is a genius. Jing-meis reaction is two-fold. On one hand she is desperate to please her mother, but on
the other she is resentful of having to keep going through these tests when she has no interest in them, or any desire to be found exceptional. The tests
