And, it was this particular work which began her career as an author, perhaps changing her life forever. Since then she has authored many other stories. In the following paper we examine Amy Tan, examining her life thus far and discussing why she decided to become an author, and then discuss how writing has changed her life. The paper also discusses some of her works. Amy Tan "Amy Tan was born February 19, 1952 in Oakland, California" (Amy Tan). Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants and "Her family faced hard experiences when brain tumor killed the father of the family, John Tan and Amys older brother," which is when they moved to Switzerland for a short time where Tan graduated from high school (Amy Tans biography). She "grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, graduated from high school in Montreux, Switzerland, and received her masters degree in Linguistics from San Jose State University. Her and her husband live in San Francisco and New York" (Amy Tan). Amy Tan was, prior to becoming an author, an incredibly successful freelance business writer. Tan was a "workaholic who derived little pleasure from drafting speeches for corporate executives," working as much as ninety hours a week because she could not seem to turn down any business which came her way (Current Biography Yearbook. 1992 559). She eventually noticed that her priorities had become incredibly distorted, stating that "I measured my success by how many clients I had and how many billable hours I had" (Current Biography Yearbook. 1992 561).
