illegal immigration is highly controversial in todays world. Americans want to place the finger of blame on some specific reasons for our current economic problems. One of the
more common accusations is that illegal immigrants are draining us economically and societally. The thesis can be presented, however, that in reality illegal immigrants give much more to this
country than they take. This relationship would undoubtedly be made even more positive if illegal immigrants were to be granted amnesty. Immigrants
have been an important component of this country throughout our history. That importance continues to this day. In 2003 33.5 million individuals in this country were not born
here (Larsen 1). This represented an amazing 11.7 percent of the U.S. population (Larsen 1). While the U.S. birth rate continues to out step the immigration rate and
the topic of immigration is certainly a controversial one, it can still be contended that the United States is intimately dependent on the immigrant population in a number of respects.
Immigrants fill a number of critical roles in U.S. society. Although they are less likely to have high school degrees than are
