The following paper asks what is amnesia, and also how can people cope with the condition. Amnesia: What is it? Amnesia is the term used to indicate that memory loss has occurred. In many cases amnesia is temporary and only affects particular aspects of a persons memory. Amnesia is caused, or can be caused, by a number of things. For example, amnesia can occur when someone experiences something that their brain cannot accept, a psychological trauma occurs and the brain essentially forgets in an attempt to protect the individual. Another form of amnesia can come when someone experiences a physical trauma to the brain. In terms of medical terms for particular types of amnesia we look first at anterograde amnesia. With this form of amnesia we are presented with "People who find it hard to remember ongoing events after suffering damage to the head. They do not tend to forget their childhood or who they are, but have trouble remembering day-to-day events," or more recent events that took place such as being married, having children, or other things that are more recent than childhood (BBC News, 2005). Another form of amnesia is retrograde amnesia. This is a far more definite form of amnesia and involves the inability to remember what happened just prior to being in an accident (BBC News, 2005).
