The following paper examines the development of Ammalats character through Chapter VIII. "Ammalat Bek" by Marlinski In Marlinskis story, in the beginning, the novel starts with an almost anticipatory position as the reader awaits the coming of someone. That someone is Ammalat: He comes, he comes! was murmured through the crowd; all was in motion" (Marlinski Chapter I). He arrives in grandeur accompanied by other horsemen. "He was habited in a black Persian cloak, edged with gold-lace, the hanging sleeves thrown back over his shoulders. A Turkish shawl was wound round his arkhaloukh, which was made of flowered silk" (Marlinski Chapter I). He wore yellow riding boots and "His gun, dagger, and pistol, glittered with gold and silver arabesque work" while the hilt of his weapon was imbedded with jewels (Marlinski Chapter I). In this introduction to the appearance of Ammalat the reader can see that he is a young man of wealth, and a man who surely likes to display that wealth. He takes pride in his popularity he is described as handsome with eyes that "glittered with a proud courtesy" (Marlinski Chapter I). Everything about him was quite ornate and proud. There was wealth and power and arrogance that seemed to completely engulf the character of this young man. People were eager to get his attention, especially the women, but he took no important note of anyone: "The chief people, the old men leaning upon their sticks, and the elders of Bouinaki, stood round in a circle to catch a kind word from the Bek; but Ammalat did not ...
