was it really a revolution? What criteria must any new government possess in order to be considered a revolutionary regime? What kinds of ideologies do the revolutionaries believe
in, and how do these differ from the dicta of the previous form of leadership? And how much of a social impact should there be to constitute a revolution?
This essay will examine these and other relevant questions in order to draw a feasible conclusion with respect to this label-debated, nonetheless very significant war (The American War
for Independence, 2001). Merriam-Websters defines a revolution as a "fundamental change in political organization; especially: the overthrow or renunciation of one government or
ruler and the substitution of another by the governed." It is also described as an "activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation" (Merriam-Webster Dictionary,
2001). In other words, in essence it is tantamount to a rebellion. However, germane to the American Revolution and whether or not it warrants the usage of
a word that implies an immense change, the events were the following. As aforementioned, the 13 American colonies revolted against their British rulers in 1775, and the war began
on April 19th when British regulars fired on the Minutemen of Lexington, Mass. The actual combat ended with the surrender of the British at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781,
