that really the case? Some contend that during the cold war, America was never really threatened by the Soviet Union and that many developments that America made were superior to
anything the Soviet Union came up with, despite the misperception that the two powers were somehow equivalent. That is not to say that Russia posed no threat to the
United States or the world. The cold war did pose problems and its legacy is "the continued existence of thousands of nuclear weapons" (Dukes 29). Indeed, the arsenal
that remains is frightening, even to the most jaded history student. While the cold war is over, it has not really come to any conclusion. Rather, it was simply realized
that the U.S. was superior so it seemed to be the end of the story. However, the remnants remain. The International Institute for Strategic Studies reported that in spite of
budget cuts after the Cold War, the United States military supremacy is still unchallenged ("arms" PG). The United States, according to their research, still possesses the most powerful conventional and
nuclear armed forces overall, and is also the worlds largest arms producer and dominates the market (PG). This is true now just as it was during what was deemed the
