and televisions, they often saved for it. When the term plastic came up, people rarely thought about credit cards. Plastic was a relatively new idea. Not everything was made of
plastic then and in fact, the film The Graduate shows that in the 1960s, plastic was the future. And it was. And it is, now that the future is here.
But today, the term plastic often refers to credit cards. In fact, in 1995, it was reported that as many as 48% (Smith, 1998, p.10) of people used credit cards
in the United States. Lifestyles today are vastly different than they were fifty years ago, and while people are criticized for being too materialistic, or greedy, other people merely refer
to it as success. But is the current generation selling their futures for instant gratification? Are they saving enough? Are they investing wisely? At first glance it may seem as
if the boomers and Xers are spoiled rotten, not scrimping and saving as their parents did, but they do seem to be rather well off. Are they, or is that
part of the illusion? II. Now: The 2000s Today, children are being raised by nannies so that two income couples can continue their careers and have all the things
that money can buy. The only things they lack are the non-material items such as time spent with their children and time left alone to enjoy life. They go through
their days for that almighty buck, something they seem to think matters more than their families. Of course, they all say that their families come first, but their actions tell
a different story. They work hard and when they finally have time off, they spend more money on luxury items and vacations, all the while not stopping to think that
