capitalism, then the financial pre-requisite is profit. For many in the middle of the nineteenth century progress was associated with profit, or perceived opportunity to make a profit.
Social conditions were determined by tradition by history and tradition. For example: Women and children were considered the "chattel," or property of a male. Parents were traditionally
respected and often lived with one of their children as they aged. The poor or the homeless received assistance, from community churches. Established institutions such as manufacturing
and banking worked for profit. To some extent we can say early education was influenced by profit, as children often left school at an early age to assist their parents
