today, American society has traditionally kept women in subservient positions to men. Consider, for example, the way women were regarded in our earlier history in regard to their abilities
to serve in the military. Prior to the twentieth century a woman officially serving in the military was practically unheard of. Women were absent in military aviation, in
fact, until 1940 (Douglas, Foster, Meyer, and Young, 2004). Although they fulfilled various roles in flight from the earliest years of aviation history, women were commonly believed to be
incapable of actually flying an aircraft (Douglas, Foster, Meyer, and Young, 2004). World War II, however, presented a need in aviation that could not have been met through any
means other than recruiting female pilots (Douglas, Foster, Meyer, and Young, 2004). Since that critical time in history, womens roles aviation have become progressively more equivalent to those held
by men. Women are now active in everything from crop dusting to commercial aviation, to piloting NASA missions. Still, however, we as a society tend to entertain the
question of whether women should actually be flying alongside men in some of the more taxing of military occupations. Much has been written
about how womens societal roles have changed over the history of our country. One of the more interesting insights that has been provided in terms of womens roles in
aviation is "American Women and Flight Since 1940". Written by Deborah G. Douglas, Amy E. Foster, Alan D. Meyer, and Lucy B. Young; this book provides a factual account
