inherent to this nation. Theatre as we know it today is the compilation of many great masters of this medium, each contributing significantly to the execution of this artistic
medium. Understanding the history of theatre in America is essential to an understanding of theatre today, since its current status is the result of each contribution made along the
way. Theatre has a long and rich history in America, becoming a profound influence as early as the 18th century
(Theatre History, 2003). William Dunlap, the earliest historian of the American stage, tells us that the drama was first
introduced in this country by the Hallams in the year 1752 when they brought over a company from London and presented The Merchant of Venice at Williamsburg, then the capital
of Virginia, in a building arranged for that purpose. "This," says Dunlap, "was the first theatre opened in America by a company of regular comedians" (Hornblow, 1919).
Beginning in the 19th century, theatre was being performed in "almost every city in the nation
- the nation then being confined largely to the east coast" (Theatre History, 2003). The four largest theatre towns were Philadelphia, where the Chestnut St. Theatre was most notable,
New York City, with its Park Street Theatre, Boston, with its Federal Street Theatre, and Charleston, famous for its Charleston Theatre (Theatre History, 2003). The first eminent English actor
