As is the case with any powerfully important historical event the American Revolution can be examined and analyzed from many perspectives, arriving at various elements and reasoning that supported the revolution. The following paper examines and analyzes two different articles/essays on the American Revolution. They are Radical Possibilities of the American Revolution by Gordon S. Wood and Elite Concerns About the American Revolution by Woody Holton. Radical Possibilities of the American Revolution by Gordon S. Wood In Woods essay he primarily focuses on the radicalism of the revolution and his essay, according to the student requesting this paper, illustrates how "American patriots...assaulted the bonds of a monarchical society." From the beginning of the essay Wood indicates that a large part of this revolution was based on the fact that the colonists were essentially in fear of losing all they had developed, created, and earned. They were fearful that their hard work, which had led to prosperity, would quickly disappear. And a powerful focus of the essay revolves around the notion of "work" and how people began to see it as more than something that had to be done, something that led to great freedom and prosperity. In the end of his essay he comes to the following conclusion: "Almost at a stroke the Revolution destroyed all the earlier talk of paternal or maternal government, filial allegiance, and mutual contractual obligations between rulers and ruled. The familial image of government now lost all its previous relevance, and the state in America emerged as something very different from what it had been" (Wood; 117).
