news reporter Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) in director Tom Shadyacs 2003 film, Bruce Almighty. In this comedy, the egotistical Bruce finds fault with everyone and everything in his life
- his career and his live-in girlfriend Grace Connelly (Jennifer Aniston) - and after a particularly bad day when he discovers he will be denied the one thing he professes
to want more than anything else, an anchor job, he lashes out at God (Morgan Freeman) (Waterhouse, 2003). He screams and curses at God, describing his cruelty toward humanity
reminiscent of "a mean kid burning an ant with a magnifying glass" (quoted in Zelizer, 2003, p. 25A). After patiently listening to Bruces tirade, God provides Bruce with an
opportunity to demonstrate that he could perform the divine role better, similar to the biblical encounter between God and Job (Zelizer, 2003). He soon discovers that playing God and
actually being God are two entirely different things, and his journey of self-discovery happily ends with character redemption. Despite the optimistic outcome, several religious groups expressed outrage that the
films situations and characters humorously depicted God, religious faith, and biblical teachings. Bruce Almighty is uniquely American in that it demonstrates how dependent upon technology the average citizen has
become in everyday life. The fact that God initially contacted Bruce via his beeper reveals how most Americans communicate through cell phones and by text messaging. Furthermore, the
