Reagan inspired a nation and gave new meaning to ideas about economics. His ideas were so compelling and unique, they called it Reaganomics. When Reagan was elected to office, it seems as if he brought vision and hope to the forefront. Boller (1984) reports that by the time the presidential convention was held, there was a great deal of excitement: "The spirit of the convention was optimistic, confident, and good-spirited" (p. 357). Certainly, a good attitude goes a long way and Reagan would take the election. This seems largely unexpected. Still, Ronald Reagan represented hope for disillusioned Americans who were still harboring a 1960s mentality. They trudged through the 1970s with Carter but were ready for the excitement that a shift in the office would bring. People were inspired by President Reagan. They could see he had a vision for the country that went to more than stability but to growth. Reagan was optimistic about a vital economic future as well as a peaceful world. While he wanted peace, part of his legacy is his support of the military. And Reagan had clout. When he wanted the Berlin Wall knocked down, he stated that, with the intent that it would happen, and it did. He was so confident in his vision, that people automatically would trust in the things he said. In reviewing his stint as president, it is easy to see how and why he dramatically influenced issues pertinent to economics and the military. Before evaluating his influence in respect to the economy and the military, some biographical data is appropriate. II.
