that spirituality and religion and family are much more important than anything money can buy. Some blame the stars and the media for proliferating this idea. However, Twitchell (1999)
believes that Americans are materialistic themselves and the media is not to blame. They are the ones who want everything. In an article published in American Demographics, the author
writes: "American materialism is alive and well in the 1990s, as evidenced by the growing physical size of everything from homes to TV screens, computer hard drives, and even hamburgers"
("The big picture: Give me your TV, your vacation home," 1996). It is hard to dispute the obvious. Americans are materialistic, despite the fact that some people are more cognizant
of other, more meaningful things. Why are Americans materialistic? It is likely tied to economic growth that has taken place in recent decades ("The big picture: Give me your TV,
your vacation home," 1996). Of course, there is nothing wrong with wealth. Even religious leaders will argue that money is not a bad thing. Yet, the end product of materialism
is not just a comfortable and happy life. Many people try to keep up with the Joneses. They buy things they do not need and perhaps cannot afford. They want
to have a new car sitting in the driveway to impress those who pass by. They lie about their income or their assets and do not give nearly enough to
