unique for a great many reasons, not the least of which involved the fact that the United States was a unique land, with a very different take on life and
meaning. Three very important American authors were Edgar Allen Poe, Nathanial Hawthorne and Herman Melville. The following paper examines their importance, and examines why they were unique and thus very
American. American Literary Figures Edgar Allen Poe may well be one of the most famous, as well as infamous, authors in American history. His work was haunting and
incredibly psychological. In this he took the gothic novel to a new height, a height of intelligence and truly deep drama. When one thinks of Poe, and his writings, there
is truly no one to compare him to as he was uniquely American and perhaps uniquely designed in nature. He was a man that many argue was a severe alcoholic,
but yet many others argue suffered from an alcoholic disease that truly disturbed his mind, unlike alcoholism. Whatever the case, his mind was different and his literature reflected that difference,
especially in human relationships. As the student requesting this paper notes, in both The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall of the House of Usher there seems to be
little concern for the development, the past, of the relationships that play a very important part in the stories. One could well argue that the past, the foundation of these
relationships, is not what is important in the present of Poes stories. The fact that a relationship exists is enough for Poe and his works and this leaves the reader
wondering about details which clearly affect and influence the relationship that is in the story, in that present tense. Realistically, the following is all that is really needed in terms
