first place. The spirit of liberalism holds at its heart the development of individual freedom. As the concepts of freedom change throughout history, so too do the concepts
of liberalism. Liberalism seeks to change in order to improve. Assuming that people maintain a rational intellect and have the ability to recognize and solve problems can often
achieve systematic improvement within the human condition. However, there are times when this all-out effort is not always enough to perpetuate the favorable elements of liberalism.
Many important changes took place in American society with regard to political, economical and social concerns. Indeed, one of the most critical aspects of this
particular era was the fact that political reforms were designed as a means by which to place more power into hands of the common man; however, these designs were not
without counter movements that attempted to impede such progress. Religion, too, played an integral role in the overall establishment of social shaping and reformation, as did the changing role
of family and womens traditional place within the social structure. Additionally, the growth of immigration and the slave system had made their way to the forefront of American concern.
One of the most encompassing issues that existed during this time frame was that of democracy -- in actuality, the debate the raged
