a means by which to keep the past alive. The legacy of our collective cultural heritage enriches our lives. Each generation has a responsibility to maintain and to
protect this heritage for the benefit of succeeding generations (AIC, 2009). Preserving the past requires a multitude of approaches with regard to
technique, inasmuch as no two materials are equal in their overall composition. Archaeological objects like ceramics, for example, crumble and chip, tapestries decay from dirt and bugs, paintings are
multilayered and require attention to each tier, books fade and photographs decompose from mold and/or mildew. As such, it takes an entirely different method to first repair and then
preserve a textile artifact than one of paper. For example, artifacts unearthed at an archeological dig may be several stone tablets with symbols and letters, writing implements that resemble
modern day pencils and a legend of some sort to indicate the meaning of each symbol. Each one would require a separate technique for restoration and preservation.
The considerations that go into conservation, preservation and curative decisions involve several factors that pertain to the time period, value and condition. For example,
