Southern states. 1830s: Southern states begin to seek a proactive way to stop threats to the institution of slavery after Nat Turners rebellion. 1850s: A number of compromises are offered
that attempt to balance the Federal stance against slavery with the rights of states; many states threaten to secede. 1860s: Abraham Lincoln is elected promising to outlaw slavery, many Southern
states secede, and the Civil War begins. 1870s: Reconstruction attempts to restore the Southern states to the Union and establishes legal prohibitions against the owning of slaves and seeks to
ensure social equality for blacks. 1880s: Mass immigration pushes populations west on the American continent, and Native American tribes begin to be displaced. Expansion is justified through the attitude of
exceptionalism, which later develops into imperialism. 1890s: Rampant industrialization occurs, as well as the establishment of trade unions to protect workers rights. The Progressive movement seeks to diminish state control
of local institutions on the grounds that it is inefficient and wasteful. Local workers support the Progressive stance, and it becomes a major political movement. Expansionism leads to the imperial
conquest of outlying US islands and incites the Spanish-American war. 1900s: McKinley is assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt, a Progressive, enters office as President. He begins a new era of
