another. With that in mind the following paper briefly touches on, answering, questions posed by the student. 1- Compare the gang system of slavery with the task system. The
gang system involved large groups in most cases, treating the slaves as groups rather than individuals. One author notes, "In Maryland and Virginia, slavery was widely used in raising tobacco
and corn and worked under the gang system" while other states worked with the task system wherein some Africans were actually able to retain their own "social patterns and maintain
a separate Gullah dialect" (Digital History, 2007). In essence, with the gang system the slaves were treated almost as criminals, given no personal freedom, much less social freedom. The task
slaves were able to possess more of their identity. 2- Describe the typical experiences of a soldier in the American Revolution? One can well assume that a typical soldier
in the American Revolution was not really a military man but more often than not a common individual, a merchant or farmer. There is likely nothing that was typical of
experience in the war for a soldier other than seeing battle, worrying about home as it became vulnerable, dreaming of freedom and losing life. 3- How did the American
Revolution affect race? The American Revolution was certainly not the Civil War and as such clearly did not have the same affect on race. But, the American Revolution did see
many African Americans become involved in fighting for freedom for the nation, although many of them were already enslaved. The American Revolution did not really change anything for the slaves.
