many different ideals that have ultimately led to the position the nation resides in today. The 19th century saw many powerful changes in the United States, as well as the
rest of the world. The United States saw the beginning and end of the Civil War, the end of slavery, the rise of industrialization, and many other changes that further
laid the foundation of the nation one sees today. The following paper examines urbanization, the election and legacy of McKinley, and foreign policy in the United States during the 19th
century. Urbanization Prior to the 19th century, and certainly prior to the end of the 19th century, most people actually lived
rurally in the United States. But, with the strong arrival of industrialization people began to live within cities, seeking work, and living in urban situations. "From 1870 to 1900, the
United States became the worlds foremost industrial nation. It emerged as the leader in meatpacking, in production of timber and steel, and in the mining of coal, iron, gold, and
silver" and this rise in industrialization also led to a rise in immigration, not just immigration from rural to urban, but immigration from outside nations to the United States in
the hopes of finding work (The United States Of America, Part Five, 2007). "As immigration exploded, urban populations surged from 6 million in 1860 to 42 million in 1910" (The
United States Of America, Part Five, 2007). With this increase in population came many different problems. There was overcrowding, poverty, disease, lack of education and lack of protection in the
