a cultures pictures women as general more talkative and emotional than men, than being more talkative and emotional is considered "normal" or "natural" for women, while men are perceived
as "normal" only if they do not display these qualities. For example, if a movie has romance and an emotional dramatic quality, it is denigrated as a "chick flick," while
an action movie, with lots of mayhem and destruction, is seen as suitable entertainment for men. These characteristics are not inherent to sex roles but rather derive completely from the
ways that societys view gender. There is a widespread societal misconception that men and women act out their societal "roles" as men and women because to do so is
"natural," something they do because they were born with either male or female plumbing. While ones sex is a function of biology, social scientists have proven repeatedly that how one
expresses this sexuality is a function of social conditioning-of gender. How gender roles are defined differs a great deal from one culture to the next. While one culture regards it
as "natural" for women to be submissive and men to be aggressive, another, may very well picture these qualities as reversed with men being largely submissive, while women act out
the role of aggressor. Kimmel (2000) has observed that all cultures share the concept that men and women are different, and that these differences are the cause of obvious
inequalities between the sexes. However, he goes on to argue that the reverse is true-it is gender inequality that causes these differences between men an women. Conceptions of gender are
