The company began selling money orders in 1882 and travelers checks in 1891 (American Express, History, 2009). They developed relationships with banks in Europe which made it very convenient for travelers to take travelers checks with them overseas (American Express, History, 2009). Setting up offices in Paris and London in 1895 and 1896 enhanced their reputation and expanded their business, which led to more international offices in Liverpool, Hamburg, Berlin, Antwerp, Naples and several other locations (American Express, History, 2009). In 1958, American Express got into the charge card business and introduced the Gold Card in 1966 (American Express, History, History, 2009). Today, American Express is the largest travelers checks issuer in the world and one of the largest travel agencies in the world although it is best known for its charge card business (Caione, 2009). American Express believes in and promotes diversity. The company writes: "Diversity is our business formula for success" (American Express, Diversity, 2009). The practice what they preach. Weldon J. Rougeau has held many high-power jobs in his career, he was the director of federal contract compliance during the Carter Administration (Knowledge@Wharton, 2006). Contract compliance is about organizations and even federal agencies hiring minority-owned and women -owned businesses. In the 1980s, Rougeau worked for American Express as a vice-president; Rougeau is Black (Knowledge@Wharton, 2006). American Express current chairman and CEO, Kenneth I. (Ken) Chenault, is also Black.
