as an employer of choice. It has attained that position over a period of years, and the distinction has enabled it to withstand external circumstances that ended the existence
of many of the companies of the travel industry. Theories and Concepts Person Culture If there was any doubt about the type of
culture that American Express works to develop and maintain, that doubt should have been dispelled following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. All of the worlds travel and
tourism industry was severely damaged in the aftermath of the attacks, only to suffer further damage in the ensuing recession and outbreak of the SARS virus that followed. American
Express was particularly hard hit in all of these shocks to the travel industry, in that it is involved in several aspects of it. American Express maintains partnerships with
airlines and hotel chains, and card use declined with the decline in travel. The company maintained its person culture (Slide 10), however, even in the weeks immediately following 9/11
and while it was eliminating thousands of jobs. Maslows Hierarchy of Needs Integral to American Express person culture is the atmosphere almost of
family that the company maintains. The study guide lists Maslow with motivational factors on Slide 27, but Maslows concepts are important in building employee loyalty as well. Too
