has angered many, and while American Exceptionalism is a concept that has come from earlier centuries as Americans showed their tenacity and prowess as they built the country, the concept
goes beyond mere arrogance. Hodgson (2006) explains that "the doctrine of American exceptionalism insists that the United States is not just exceptionally successful and powerful, but morally and politically exceptional
as well." The concept is also aligned with religion and a state where people have come together with a firm belief in developing a great country. American Exceptionalism has
been associated with many things, but it seems as if religion is an important aspect of this idea. American Exceptionalism is something that was propelled by religious zeal, and something
that may be equated with the idea of the Protestant work ethic. At the same time, American Exceptionalism is the basis for a country equated with a doctrine of separation
of church and state. Here, where religion is prominent, so is the desire to keep it separate from government. When discussing American Exceptionalism then, it is difficult to talk about
it without also discussing religion. Religion is seemingly the driving force of the activities and events aligned with American Exceptionalism. Many things to arise from history has created a sense
that America is built on religion, and that is what created the nation as it is known today. Early colonists came to America for religious freedom. In John Winthrops City
upon a Hill sermon of 1630 he ended his speech as follows: " Therefore lett us choose life, that wee, and our Seede, may live; by obeyeing his voyce, and
cleaveing to him, for hee is our life, and our prosperity." This speech has been associated with American Exceptionalism because of the vision possessed by Winthrop of a city
