The Vietnam War stands as one of the worst involvements in American history. The U.S., of course, withdrew from that war in what some consider
a national disgrace. Others, however, applauded that withdrawal. The topic is controversial and so are the circumstances that led to our involvement and ultimate withdrawal.
From an American perspective, of course, the most relevant point of the Vietnamese War fall within the years of American involvement, between 1963 and 1973.
The Vietnam War, however, resulted from very complex historical circumstances, circumstances which started long before the first American soldier arrived in Vietnam.
There seems to be as many opinions on U.S. involvement in Vietnam as there are people who consider it. Even among those that served in Vietnam there is
a wide range of opinions on the appropriateness of our involvement there and the factors that ultimately led to our defeat. Michael Lind, author of "Vietnam: The Necessary War",
is one of the handful of Americans that still support our involvement in Vietnam. In short, Linds book presents the theory
that the Vietnam War resulted from a complexity of geopolitical factors, factors that Lind contends were perpetuated by a Communist conspiracy. Judith Coburn (1999), author of "An unnecessary crock:
