the American people lifted and focused in hard times. Eliot Asinofs work "Eight Men Out" is the story of a time in history when the sport of baseball was tainted,
staining much of the history of baseball to come. The following paper examines his work, discussing the generalizations, themes, and insights offered into the American culture of the time.
Eight Men Out "Eliot Asinof is renowned among baseball writers for Eight Men Out, his brilliant reconstruction of the infamous Black Sox scandal in the 1919 World Series. The
author of five novels and eight works of nonfiction, he served an apprenticeship in the minor leagues as a prelude to his many works about baseball" (Man on Spikes: Eliot
Asinof). As such we can assume that Asinof is somewhat of an expert on the subject and thus provides us with legitimate information, something further supported by the fact that
"Asinofs persevering research in the face of considerable obstacles changed the publics perception of that tragic event. Among the difficulties Asinof overcame were the conspiracy of silence maintained by almost
all of the principals until they died and the destruction of the states evidence used at the trial, a turn of events that to this day has never really been
investigated" (Tax 12). We also note that, "Moving behind the scenes, he perceptively examines the motives and backgrounds of the players and the conditions that made the improbable fix
